Essential components of reading instruction
"[Implement] . . . reading instruction . . . that . . . includes the essential components of reading instruction." From NCLB Act
Kidspiration® provides "reading comprehension strategies," one of five essential components defined by the National Reading Panel (NRP). The findings of the NRP indicate scientific research points to several comprehension strategies central to Kidspiration:
- Using graphic organizers
- Generating questions
- Recognizing story structure
- Summarizing

Research-based instruction
"Procur[e] and [implement] instructional materials, including education technology such as software and other digital curricula, that are based on scientifically based reading research." From NCLB Act
Research in educational and cognitive psychology has revealed that visual learning enhances understanding and retention through dual coding in both visual and verbal modes. Classroom use of visual learning techniques is expressed in the form of graphic organizers, the organization and structure of information represented in text-and-picture diagrams.
The National Reading Panel (NRP) identified studies on graphic organizers that found:
- Improved memory of written material after using such methods
- General achievement gains when applied to content area reading
Kidspiration's interactive graphic organizing capabilities support research-based comprehension strategies identified by the NRP. Students can use Kidspiration to express their thoughts and represent what they have learned in multiple media—text, spoken words and pictures—which research indicates can lead to higher achievement.
A review of scientifically based research developed by the Institute for the Advancement of Research in Education at AEL supports the use of graphic organizers, such as those created in Kidspiration and Inspiration, to provide short-term and long-term learning benefits:
- Increased comprehension
- Improved writing skills
- Superior retention

Students with special needs
"[Implement] . . . reading instruction . . . to . . . children . . . with a specific learning disability . . . related to reading . . . or . . . identified as having limited English proficiency." From NCLB Act
Kidspiration includes features that meet the needs of students with learning disabilities and English language learners.
Kidspiration offers students with learning disabilities a variety of ways of representing information and ideas:
- Picture View supports a non-linear representation of ideas; Writing View supports a linear representation of ideas
- Supports multiple learning modalities: learning from pictures, text and spoken voice
- Provides a framework and structure for organizing both concrete and abstract ideas
A review of scientifically based research developed by the Institute for the Advancement of Research in Education at AEL demonstrates the learning benefits of using graphic organizers with students with learning disabilities. Click here to find a detailed summary of the review.
Kidspiration offers English language learners:
- The ability to represent ideas and their relationships visually—a common means of communicating structure and meaning that cuts across all spoken and written languages
- Text-to-speech and voice recording capabilities that support learning the English language in the context of words and pictures
Kidspiration is used broadly by institutions and programs throughout the country that focus on special needs students:
- Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System
- Dunn Loring Center/Integrated Technology Services
- Alliance for Technology Access
- Center for Applied Special Technology
- LD Online
- Schools using Hampton-Brown materials for English language learners (included in California's Approved Reading First Program http://www.cde.ca.gov/board/readingfirst/readingfirst.pdf).
- California Technology Assistance Program
